Key Takeaways
- The existing room, chosen layout and amount of removal shape the starting price
- Tiles, fixtures and the number of licensed trades involved affect the total
- Wet-area preparation and waterproofing need to be allowed for with the tiling work
- A clear written quote is more useful than a generic package price
Start with what is changing
The cost of a bathroom renovation depends on much more than the size of the room. Keeping the layout and replacing the finishes is a different job from moving plumbing, changing electrical points or rebuilding several parts of the room.
A useful first step is to decide what must change, what can stay and which finishes matter most to you.
What usually shapes the quote
The existing bathroom
Old tiles and fixtures may need to be removed before the surfaces underneath can be checked. Access, disposal and the amount of preparation required all affect the work involved.
The layout
Keeping plumbing and electrical locations can reduce the number of other trades involved. If fixtures or services are moving, that needs to be discussed before the quote is finalised.
Tiles and fixtures
Tile size, pattern, edge details and the number of tiled walls affect labour. The cost of the bath, shower screen, vanity, tapware and other fixtures also varies widely.
Wet-area preparation
Bathroom renovation work can include preparation and wet-area waterproofing where it forms part of Ace's tiling work. Ace does not offer waterproofing as a separate service.
Applicable work may need to follow NCC requirements and AS 3740 for domestic wet areas.
Licensed subcontractors
Plumbing, electrical or carpentry may be needed during a bathroom renovation. Ace can coordinate appropriately licensed subcontractors for that work.
Compare what is included
A low headline price is not useful if it leaves out removal, disposal, preparation, fixtures or other trades. Ask each contractor to explain the work included and any items you need to supply yourself.
A clear quote should make it easy to understand:
- the areas being removed and rebuilt;
- the tiling and preparation included;
- the fixtures and materials included or excluded;
- which licensed trades are required; and
- how changes will be handled once work begins.
For the tiling component, our Sydney tiling cost guide explains why labour ranges vary.
